Fraudsters Use ECB Name to Deceive About Digital Euro
The European Central Bank (ECB) warns about scams that use its name and image to deceive citizens into transferring funds. Criminals distribute fake letters inviting participation in a supposed pilot program for the digital euro, promising high returns with no risks. The ECB clarifies that it does not offer investment products related to the digital euro and does not ask the public for money. Furthermore, scammers employ artificial intelligence to create fake videos of executives and manage fake profiles on social media. They also contact victims through spoofed calls and emails to give an appearance of legitimacy. The digital euro is not available to the public; the retail pilot phase will begin in the second half of 2027, with the participation of 36 payment service providers. The official issuance of the digital euro is projected for 2029, subject to prior assessments.
