Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates by 25 Basis Points, Adjusts Benchmark Rate to 3.75%-4.00%
On September 17, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, adjusting the benchmark rate to 3.75%-4.00%. This marks the first rate hike since July 2023 and aligns with market expectations, following five consecutive meetings where rates were held steady. The FOMC statement noted that despite uncertainties, U.S. economic activity continues to expand at a robust pace, with domestic consumption remaining strong, although inflation remains elevated. The latest economic projections indicate that Fed officials expect the median federal funds rate to be 4.1% by the end of 2026, up from the June forecast of 3.8%; the median rate expectation for the end of 2027 has also risen to 4.1%, significantly higher than the June forecast of 3.6%. The FOMC members unanimously agreed on this rate decision, with the previous meeting's voting results showing 9 in favor and 3 against.
