ESMA to Focus on AI and Tokenization as Regulatory Priorities Starting in 2027
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) will establish new EU strategic regulatory priorities themed around digital innovation starting in 2027, initially focusing on AI and tokenization. National regulatory authorities in the EU will identify emerging areas of tokenization, documenting how companies use or plan to use AI and tokenization technologies in products and processes that directly affect investors, and conducting preliminary checks on the most impacted firms. ESMA stated that the risks requiring attention include biases or misleading outputs from AI, products that are difficult for investors to understand, and reliance on a small number of third-party service providers. This priority will be pursued in parallel with the regulatory priorities for cyber and operational resilience set to launch in 2025.
