The unemployment rate for college graduates in the United States reached approximately 5.6% in the second quarter of 2026, with an underutilization rate of 42%. Recent graduates feel that job searching has become more difficult due to AI, but economists analyze the causes as a combination of factors including the spread of remote work, a reduction in entry-level hiring, and economic slowdown. According to a report from the New York Federal Reserve Bank, 64% of the increase in unemployment among young college graduates can be attributed to remote work. Remote work reduces learning opportunities for newcomers, and companies feel burdened by the training of inexperienced personnel. Research from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab found that employment for workers aged 22-25 in occupations with high exposure to AI is 19% lower than that of less exposed groups. However, this is interpreted as an early technical indicator, and alternative explanations such as remote work and economic conditions still exist. A study from Warwick University’s CAGE research indicates that generative AI and remote work are linked to a decrease in the proportion of newcomers, but when considering both variables together, the effect of remote work remains while the AI coefficient weakens. According to a report from ZipRecruiter, the employment rate for recent graduates within three months has increased to 77%, but 47% reported that AI has influenced hiring. Levelio Labs stated that companies investing in AI have an average employment rate that is 10.2% higher. Current data shows that there is a coexistence of the perception that 'AI eliminates entry-level jobs' and empirical analysis suggesting that 'remote work and changes in hiring structure are larger variables.'
