Coinbase Institute: Stablecoins Ideal for AI Agent Micropayments
Stablecoins are the most suitable tool for micropayments made by AI agents, according to a Coinbase Institute report. The report highlights that legacy payment networks, such as cards, face limitations in micropayments due to fixed per-transaction costs and human-centered identity verification systems. In contrast, stablecoins can facilitate cross-border micropayments with low fees and fast settlement. Additionally, the open payment standard x402 standardizes the process for AI agents to pay per use for content or data. The report emphasizes the need for policies that support open standards and a variety of payment methods to prevent the AI agent payments market from becoming reliant on closed systems operated by a few companies.
