CME Bitcoin Futures Net Short Positions Expand to 41,000 BTC

As of August 25, the net short position of leveraged funds in CME Bitcoin (BTC) futures has expanded to 41,000 BTC. This represents an increase of approximately 4,072 BTC in net short exposure compared to the previous week, indicating that institutional derivative trading is becoming concentrated at CME. According to the CFTC report, leveraged funds in CME Bitcoin futures maintain net shorts across both standard and micro contracts, with CryptoSlate estimating the net short size at around 41,252 BTC. The open interest in CME Bitcoin futures is recorded at approximately 118,267 BTC, while the open interest related to Coinbase contracts stands at about 2,322 BTC, making CME's size roughly 51 times larger. Leveraged funds include hedge funds and some asset management firms, and it is difficult to determine market direction based solely on net short figures. CME net shorts may include underlying trades that involve holding spot Bitcoin or ETFs while selling futures. The CFTC report aggregates and publishes positions as of every Tuesday, with this particular aggregation being as of August 25.
