On August 24, ZeroHedge pointed out that the peak in trading related to chip and storage stocks coincided with the day when total return swap (TRS) financing costs reached an all-time high. Analysts believe that the market's narrative surrounding the rise of AI, chips, and storage sectors may have obscured the significant influence of leveraged funds. Institutions like Situational Awareness engaged in high-leverage trading through tools such as TRS, which further amplified the volatility of related assets after the market turned. Relevant data indicates that Situational Awareness faced substantial drawdowns due to high-leverage positions, forcing them to liquidate a large number of tech stock positions, suggesting that the rise of certain popular chip and AI trades may not be entirely driven by fundamentals.
