In August, cheese imports in Ukraine increased, creating greater competition for local producers. The share of semi-hard cheeses from the EU reached nearly a third of the market. In July, imports of rennet-type cheeses rose by 65% compared to July of last year, setting a record for that month. Deliveries of semi-hard cheeses increased by more than 80%. Poland remains the main supplier, but other European producers are also showing interest in the Ukrainian market. Ukrainian companies cannot compensate for losses in the domestic market through exports, as in July, deliveries of semi-hard cheeses abroad decreased by a quarter year-on-year. Exports of cottage cheese products fell even more. High export prices support producers; however, competition from Russian suppliers in Kazakhstan may create additional pressure. Major Ukrainian producers are not yet changing their base prices for semi-hard cheeses, although some products are being sold at discounts. An increase in production costs is expected due to rising raw material prices. In the first half of the year, imports of hard and semi-hard cheeses into Ukraine increased by 27% compared to the same period in 2022, with the share of imported products in this segment exceeding a third of sales.
