CFTC Warns of Online Dating Cryptocurrency Investment Scams

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a notice reminding users to be vigilant against online financial dating scams, listing six warning signs. Scammers contact users through "wrong number" texts or likes, using fake names and photos to establish friendships or romantic relationships, before shifting the conversation to cryptocurrency or forex trading. The notice points out that these types of dating scams are related to "pig butchering" schemes that defrauded over $3.5 billion in 2023. The warning signs listed by the CFTC include: requests to move to private messaging apps, frequent contact without ever meeting, claims of becoming wealthy through cryptocurrency or forex, recommendations for trading websites that only accept cryptocurrency, requests to transfer funds to their wallets or designated platforms, and accounts showing easy profits in a short period.
