Blockchain: IBM Connects Its Digital Asset Platform to Swift's Ledger
Blockchain enters the engine room. IBM connects its Digital Asset Haven platform to the shared ledger developed by Swift. Banks will thus be able to transmit instructions related to tokenized deposits using the payment formats they already employ, without immediately replacing their existing systems.
The company also opens a local version of its platform on IBM Z and LinuxONE. This option targets institutions that wish to keep their data and keys within their own infrastructure rather than relying on a public cloud.
Key Points
- IBM connects Digital Asset Haven to the shared ledger developed by Swift
- An ISO 20022 adapter allows banks to send instructions regarding tokenized deposits
- Assets can circulate continuously, while final settlement remains assured by traditional payment systems
- A local version is now in beta on IBM Z and LinuxONE mainframes
IBM Links Digital Asset Haven to Swift's Shared Ledger
Launched in October 2025 with wallet specialist Dfns, Digital Asset Haven provides banks, governments, and large enterprises with the necessary tools to store, transfer, and manage digital assets. The platform includes wallet management, transaction signing, and compliance checks.
IBM now adds a connection to permissioned blockchains, including the shared ledger designed by Swift. An ISO 20022 messaging adapter, still in beta, translates instructions related to tokenized deposits into the language already used by banking infrastructures.
A tokenized deposit represents on a blockchain an amount deposited with a bank. It remains recorded as a liability of the issuing institution and thus retains its status as a bank deposit. It is thus distinguished from a stablecoin, whose value depends on reserves held by a separate company.
This connection allows for moving these digital claims 24 hours a day, including on weekends. However, the final settlement continues to go through traditional systems, such as T2 in the eurozone or Fedwire in the United States. Swift thus maintains its role as orchestrator: its network transports the instructions but not the value directly.
The cooperative connects more than 12,500 financial institutions in over 200 countries and markets. More than forty institutions participated in the design of its shared ledger, of which 17 joined the pilot launched in July 2026. Citi, HSBC, BNP Paribas, UBS, Wells Fargo, Standard Chartered, BNY, DBS, and MUFG are among the participants.
