Block Adds Bitcoin Lightning to AI Agents' Payments
Block has joined the x402 Foundation and brought Bitcoin Lightning support to the x402 protocol. AI agents will be able to independently pay for access to data, computing power, and digital services directly in bitcoins. The x402 protocol, developed by the Coinbase exchange, allows AI agents to make payments automatically when they encounter a web service that requires payment. The x402 Foundation was established in April 2026 and is supported by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, as well as crypto companies like Coinbase and the Solana Foundation. Until now, payments within x402 have primarily been made using stablecoins, but bitcoin is now also being added. The Lightning Network enables the sending of small amounts almost instantly and for a fraction of a cent, which is ideal for AI agents that can make thousands of small payments daily.
