Bitget Integrates Sygnum's Banking Custody, Surpassing 50% of Global Trading Volume
The cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has integrated with the over-the-counter custody platform of the Swiss bank Sygnum. As a result, more than half of the global trading volume is settled against collateral held by banks. Bitget's institutional clients can trade spot and derivative contracts while their collateral is held by Sygnum in Switzerland, protected against bankruptcy. The balance is mirrored on Bitget and available for trading. Sygnum reported that with Bitget's entry, exchanges integrated into its Protect platform represent more than half of the global trading volume. Bitget serves over 125 million users in more than 150 countries and is one of the largest platforms in terms of derivative volume. Over-the-counter custody, previously an option for cautious trading desks, has become the institutional standard. Sygnum stated that Protect, launched in April 2024, saw asset growth exceeding 900% in 2025, surpassing $1 billion. The platform accepts collateral such as bitcoin, ether, stablecoins, and U.S. Treasury securities, whose yields help offset costs. Thomas Eichenberger, Executive Vice President of Sygnum Bank, emphasized that over-the-counter custody is essential for the settlement of institutional trades in digital assets. Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, stated that bank-level custody is becoming the expected standard for institutions.
