Bank of Japan May Raise Inflation Forecast, Keeps Rates Unchanged
On October 20, four sources revealed that the Bank of Japan may raise its inflation outlook for the next fiscal year in its upcoming forecasts due to sustained price pressures from rising oil prices. It is expected that the bank will maintain interest rates at the policy meeting ending on October 30, unless there is a significant drop in the yen's exchange rate that raises import costs and overall inflation levels. Sources indicated that the Bank of Japan may emphasize the growing inflation risks in its quarterly report released after the meeting, leaving room for a potential rate hike as early as December. One source noted that consumer price increases may persist longer than expected, although underlying inflation has not changed significantly.
