ARC Live Stream Fiasco: Why Are Crypto Investors So Afraid of Indians?
Author: Deep Tide TechFlow
Last night, Circle's Arc public blockchain held a live stream for its mainnet launch. During the presentation segment featuring the team and developers, several South Asian developers appeared on camera.
Then, crypto investors were terrified.
"This is the @arc team, should I be worried? They told me to sell," said a Portuguese investor.
Another KOL bluntly stated: "I just sold everything I had on @arc after seeing this live stream."
Meme coins and related platform tokens on the Arc chain faced massive sell-offs in the following 12 hours, with some tokens dropping by 40% to 75%. The community discussions repeatedly featured the same phrase in both Chinese and English: "Whenever Indians appear, Meme coins die."
This is not prejudice; it is a post-traumatic stress response.
Before hastily criticizing the community for "racial discrimination," let’s look at some data.
BitConnect (2016-2018): One of the most notorious Ponzi schemes in crypto history. Founder Satish Kumbhani, from Gujarat, was 35 years old. He defrauded investors of about $2.4 billion.
The brainwashing video "Hey hey hey! Bitconneeeeect!" remains one of the most widely circulated memes in the crypto space. Kumbhani fled after being indicted by the FBI and has not been apprehended. Another promoter from India, Divyesh Darji, was arrested at Delhi airport, with the case involving approximately $12.7 billion.
GainBitcoin (2014-2018): The largest crypto scam in India. Founder Amit Bhardwaj promised a 10% monthly return on BTC investments, raising between 385,000 to 600,000 bitcoins, worth approximately $3 billion to $4.7 billion at the time. Over 100,000 investors were affected. Amit Bhardwaj died in custody in 2022, while his brother Ajay is still under investigation.
WazirX (2024): India’s largest crypto exchange was hacked, resulting in a loss of $234.9 million. Although the hackers were North Korea's Lazarus Group, WazirX faced severe criticism for its handling of the aftermath, and user funds have yet to be fully recovered, with founder Nischal Shetty facing numerous complaints.
According to CoinIndex, since 2015, Indian investors have lost over ₹7.2 trillion (approximately $8.6 billion) in crypto scams. In just 2024 alone, related complaints exceeded 3.64 million.
This list could go on: Morris Coin, ATC Coin, OctaFX, HPZ Token... each name represents real monetary losses and genuine victims.
The crypto community's reflexive response to South Asian faces is not unfounded. It has been "trained" by billions of dollars in real losses. Calling it prejudice is not wrong, but a more accurate description might be: post-traumatic stress response.
Back to the Arc live stream.
The community's panic was triggered not only by the faces but also by the video quality and background.
The rough backdrop starkly contrasted with the high-end blockchain, considering that Circle is a publicly traded company regulated by the U.S. federal government, holding compliance licenses in multiple countries.
These two signals combined triggered the stereotype of a rug pull.
However, the Indian developers in front of the camera are also unfairly judged.
India has one of the largest developer communities in the world. IIT produces more engineering talent each year than MIT and Stanford combined. CEOs of Google, Microsoft, and Adobe all hail from India, and Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, is also from India. Contributors of South Asian descent have never been a minority in Ethereum's core developer community.
If the unwritten industry rule becomes "seeing Indian faces in a live stream = sell," then this industry is pushing one of its largest talent pools out the door with prejudice.
That said, in a market where a meme coin can drop 75% in 30 seconds due to a live stream screenshot, perhaps "face trading" is the most honest pricing mechanism, which is itself a meme.
