Aptos Foundation revamps tokenomics, halves staking rewards to 2.6%
The Aptos Foundation has announced a revamp of APT tokenomics, reducing the annual staking reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%, increasing gas fees tenfold, and capping total supply at 2.1 billion APT. The foundation plans to permanently lock and stake 210 million APT, approximately 18% of the current supply, and will fund operations through staking rewards instead of token sales. Future ecosystem grants will depend on performance metrics, and a buyback program funded by cash reserves and future revenue is under consideration. The initial four-year token unlock cycle is set to conclude in October, which is expected to decrease annual token unlock volume by 60%. These changes aim to lower token issuance and increase token burns, potentially shifting APT to a deflationary structure if implemented as proposed.
