In late July 2026 two things happened almost at once. Perry Warjiyo resigned as Governor of Bank Indonesia — his letter dated 25 July 2026, announced 27 July 2026 — and the rupiah closed at Rp18,027/USD on 4 August 2026.
Much coverage then jumps to a third claim: that a weakening currency is pushing Indonesians into crypto. This page does not. It has three parts: what the currency data shows, how currency pressure works mechanically, and what the evidence does not show. The third is not an appendix. The absence is itself the finding.
The letter is dated 25 July 2026 and was announced on 27 July 2026 by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi. The stated reason was personal, with no further explanation. Destry Damayanti, Senior Deputy Governor, is acting governor; no definitive successor had been nominated as of that date. Outlets framed the departure as occurring amid currency weakness — “amid”, not “because of”.
One day can carry two numbers: reporting quotes JISDOR (the central bank reference rate), the spot close, or bank quotes. On 30 July 2026 spot broke Rp18,100 the same day JISDOR strengthened. Never compare the two as one series.
The policy rate was raised 25bp to 5.75% on 17–18 June 2026 and held there on 21–22 July, framed around exchange-rate stabilisation. Only those two decisions are cited; earlier months' accounts contradict each other.
That framing recurs in local coverage — in Bloomberg Technoz, Suara.com, BeritaSatu, Aktualitas.id, InvestorTrust and CNBC Indonesia Research. The traceable dated instances:
| Date | Level and move |
|---|---|
| 9 Jan 2025 | Rp16,210, −0.06% |
| 16 Jan 2025 | Rp16,366 |
| 15 Sep 2025 | not recorded |
| 15 Oct 2025 | not recorded |
| 12 Feb 2026 | Rp16,828, −0.23% |
| 25 May 2026 | Rp17,726 |
| 27 Jul 2026 | Rp17,970 |
| week to 31 Jul 2026 | −0.31% on the week |
In that final week nine other Asian currencies rose, led by JPY +3.83%, with oil named as a driver (Brent +23.59%, WTI +21.83% in July 2026) — Indonesia is a net oil importer. The table is a search result, not a census: the pattern was reported on at least eight dated occasions between January 2025 and July 2026, but cannot be called routine.
What follows is the general mechanism, applicable to any currency against the US dollar — not a claim about behaviour in any one country, which would need evidence not found here.
Crypto prices also fall, sometimes sharply, including while a currency weakens: none of these mechanisms promises a direction.
The most widely circulated claim — that currency weakness is driving Indonesian crypto demand — has no attributable support in retrievable material as of 5 August 2026. All four findings below are negative.
Two independent searches, differently phrased, returned no quote from any identified executive, analyst, association or researcher attributing crypto demand to currency depreciation, and no volume figure tied to a weakness episode.
In the Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index 2025 (2 September 2025) Indonesia ranked 7th, down from 3rd in the 2024 index, behind the US, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Brazil — a fall over the same period the currency weakened. The one local article found on this exact question describes the market as relatively stable, with some major assets up slightly.
Bank Indonesia stated that monetary policy and exchange-rate stability would continue despite the leadership change, and the Coordinating Minister guaranteed the transition would not disrupt the exchange rate. No official source links the resignation to the currency's moves in either direction.
A USDT/IDR premium over the official rate is the most direct empirical bridge to crypto demand, and it is the one that is missing. Three trackers surfaced, none publishing a figure. Ambient quotes near Rp17,900–18,000 carry no stated official baseline, so no premium can be derived without fabricating one.
The retrievable evidence does not show it: no named party was found making the link, and the adoption ranking fell from 3rd to 7th. The link is not demonstrated — which is not the same as impossible.
Likely different conventions: the JISDOR reference rate, the market spot close, or a bank quote. On 30 July 2026 spot broke Rp18,100 while JISDOR strengthened.
Almost every crypto pair is quoted against the US dollar; those quotes can be viewed on WEEX futures markets. Risk warning: futures trading carries a high level of risk — leverage magnifies gains and losses alike, and your entire margin can be lost. Never trade with funds you cannot afford to lose.
